Paragliding in Annecy: flying the Col de la Forclaz

Illustration of paraglider canopies at different heights above the turquoise lake
In short: almost everything sold as “paragliding in Annecy” launches from the Col de la Forclaz, on the east side of the lake above Talloires — not from the town. It is a south-west facing slope that drops straight over the water, equipped by the commune and the French free-flight federation, and in high season it handles up to 200 flights a day. No experience is needed for a tandem flight. The thing that cancels you is wind, not cloud.

Why the Forclaz and not somewhere else

Free-flight sites are made by geography, not by marketing, and the Forclaz has the geography. The col sits at 1,147 m and connects Talloires, on the east shore, to the Montmin valley behind it. The launch faces south-west over open water, which means the afternoon thermals come up the slope reliably and there is nothing hard underneath you for the whole first part of the flight.

That combination is rare enough that the site is one of the busiest in Europe. It hosted the FAI World Acrobatic Paragliding Championships in 2016, and the road up has been used by the Tour de France five times, classified as a category 1 climb since 1994. None of that changes your flight, but it is the reason there are a dozen operators here rather than one.

Straight-line, the col is about 13.5 km from the middle of Annecy. By road it is a good deal further, because the road goes round the lake and then up. Most operators include the transfer from town in the price — check, because the ones that do not assume you have a car.

What actually happens

You meet in town or at the col, get fitted into a harness, and walk to the edge of the slope with a pilot strapped behind you. Launching is the part people worry about and the part that takes the least time: the wing comes up, you run a few steps downhill, and the ground stops being there. There is no jump and no drop.

Then you are flying over Lake Annecy with the Bauges on one side and the Aravis on the other, and on a clear day Mont Blanc off to the east. You land on the flat ground near the south end of the lake. Operators sell a short discovery flight and a longer thermal flight; the longer one costs more because it needs better conditions and a more patient pilot, not because it is a different aircraft.

Usually included

  • A qualified tandem pilot and all the flying kit
  • Harness, helmet and the wing itself
  • Insurance through the operator’s federation cover
  • Usually the transfer up to the launch from central Annecy

Not included

  • Photos and video, which are almost always a paid extra
  • Your own transport, if the operator does not shuttle
  • Anything at all if the wind cancels — you are refunded or rescheduled

Choosing between the flights

Three tiers, and the difference is time in the air rather than anything about safety.

Weather, and the one booking mistake

Paragliding cancels for wind. It does not cancel for grey skies, and it does not usually cancel for a forecast of rain later — morning flights go ahead in front of afternoon storms all summer. What stops flying is wind from the wrong direction or too much of it, and that call is made on the morning, at the col, by people who fly there every day.

Insider tip

Book your flight for the first full day you are in Annecy, not the last. Operators reschedule a wind-cancelled flight readily, but only if you still have days left. Booking it for your final afternoon turns a normal cancellation into a refund and a disappointment.

What works

  • The single best thing you can do in Annecy, by a distance
  • No experience, no training and no fitness needed
  • Deep operator choice, so quality is high and slots exist
  • Runs from spring to autumn, not just high summer
  • Free cancellation on most bookings up to 24 hours before

Worth knowing

  • Weather-dependent in a way nothing else here is
  • The launch is on the far side of the lake — check transfers
  • Photo and video packages are extra, and are pitched hard
  • Summer slots on the best-rated operators go days in advance
  • Not a good fit if you are unhappy with heights or motion

Is it safe?

Tandem paragliding is a regulated commercial activity in France and the pilots are licensed professionals flying a site they know intimately. The Forclaz is equipped by the commune and the FFVL, the national free-flight federation, rather than being an informal launch. The honest framing is that the risk is not zero, it is managed, and the single largest factor in it is conditions — which is exactly why operators cancel as readily as they do. A flight that gets called off is the system working.

Where this fits in a trip

Half a day, including the transfer. It slots naturally into two days in Annecy as the second morning, with the Old Town on day one. If you are only here for one day, choose between flying and the lake — both is a rush.

For the view without the flight, Le Semnoz and Mont Veyrier give you the same panorama from the ground.

Frequently asked questions

Where do paragliding flights in Annecy take off from?

The Col de la Forclaz, at 1,147 m above Talloires-Montmin on the east side of the lake — not from Annecy itself. It is about 13.5 km from the town centre in a straight line and further by road, so check whether your operator includes the transfer up. Most do.

Do you need experience to paraglide in Annecy?

None at all for a tandem flight. A licensed pilot flies the wing; you are strapped into a harness in front of them and your entire job is to run a few steps at launch and keep your legs up at landing. Operators fly complete beginners, children and people well into their seventies.

When is the best time of day to fly?

Mornings are calmer and more reliable; afternoons have stronger thermals and longer flights. If you want the smoothest possible ride, book early. If you want time in the air and do not mind movement, book later. In high summer, mornings also dodge the afternoon storms.

What happens if the weather cancels my flight?

You are rescheduled if you still have days in Annecy, or refunded if you do not. Wind is what stops flying, not cloud or a forecast of rain, and the decision is made on the morning at the launch. This is the reason to book your flight for the first day of your trip rather than the last.

How much does paragliding in Annecy cost?

Tandem flights start from around EUR 100 for a standard discovery flight, with longer thermal flights running higher. Photos and video are almost always sold separately. Prices move with season and operator, so treat the figures on the cards above as current rather than fixed.
