Lyon to Annecy: train, bus or car

By train
There is no shortage of services between Lyon and Annecy, but most involve one change — typically at Chambéry or Aix-les-Bains, both of which are on the line running east into Savoie. The connection is usually short and the whole trip is comfortably a half-day-or-less journey.
Lyon is also the change point for a good number of the Paris–Annecy routings that are not direct, which is worth knowing if you are building a longer French itinerary: Paris, Lyon and Annecy chain together sensibly by rail.
By bus
Direct coaches run Lyon to Annecy in about 1h50. As on the Geneva route, the bus is the budget option and it arrives centrally, which removes the usual objection to coach travel. If you are travelling light and not in a hurry, it is hard to argue with.
By car
About 138 km and roughly 1h20, almost all of it motorway heading east. It is an easy drive and the last stretch, dropping towards the lake, is genuinely lovely.
Whether you want the car once you arrive is a separate question. It is useful for the far shore and for day trips, and a nuisance in the centre — the Old Town is pedestrianised and the central car parks fill by mid-morning in summer. The parking page covers the detail, including the 1.95 m height limit at Parking Courier.
Flying into Lyon instead of Geneva
Lyon-Saint-Exupéry is a real alternative to Geneva for reaching Annecy, and it is worth checking when Geneva fares are high. The transfer is longer — Geneva airport is about 46 km from Annecy against Lyon’s 138 km — but the route network out of Lyon is broader, and for some origins the fare difference more than covers the extra ground time.
If you are flying in and the Geneva and Lyon fares are close, take Geneva. The 50-minute direct coach from GVA is the single easiest airport transfer in this part of France, and the extra hour and a half you save at the Lyon end is an hour and a half on the lake.
