The best time to visit Annecy

The weather, including the part most guides leave out
July highs sit around 25 °C and January highs around 5 °C. That is the easy part. The part almost nobody mentions is the rain: Annecy gets around 1,600 mm a year, which is high for France. May is the wettest month, at roughly 164 mm across about 16 days, and even July still takes about 145 mm.
Summer thunderstorms here are normal, not exceptional. They tend to build over the surrounding mountains in the afternoon and arrive quickly. This is not a reason to stay away; it is a reason to pack a shell, to keep an eye on the sky if you are on the water, and to have one indoor plan — the château is the obvious one — in reserve.
Month by month
- April–early May. Quiet and green, the mountains still white, the lake far too cold to swim. Good for walking and photography, poor for a beach holiday.
- Mid-May–June. The sweet spot. Long days, warm air, everything open, prices still sane. The lake becomes swimmable towards the end of June. Watch the festival dates.
- July. Hot, busy, fully alive. The water is at its best. Book everything ahead.
- August. The busiest month of the year, with French holidays at full stretch. Wonderful if you like a lively town, difficult if you do not. The Fête du Lac is the highlight.
- September. The other sweet spot, and arguably the better one. The lake is still warm from summer, the crowds have gone, and the light is superb.
- October–November. Quiet, often beautiful, increasingly wet. Services and boat timetables thin out.
- December–March. A different town entirely — see Annecy in winter.
That is the shape of the year. For the actual numbers behind it — average highs, rainfall, sunshine hours and lake temperature for each of the twelve months — see Annecy weather by month.
If you can only travel in high season, come in July rather than August. The difference in crowding between the two is much larger than the difference in weather, and the lake is warm in both.
The two dates that move the whole town
The animation festival runs 13–19 June 2027, with Mifa 15–18 June. It is the largest event of its kind in the world and it fills every bed in the region. Plan around it in one direction or the other — there is no neutral option.
The Fête du Lac is Europe’s largest pyrotechnic show over water, about an hour of choreographed fireworks, light and water on the lake. It traditionally falls on the first Saturday of August. Seated areas are ticketed and some free viewing exists within capacity limits. The 2027 date is not yet confirmed, so treat the first Saturday as the likely one and check in spring rather than booking flights around it now.
When the water is warm
Surface temperature reaches around 22 °C in July and August. Because this is a deep glacial lake it warms late and cools slowly, which produces the counterintuitive result that September is often better for swimming than June. If your trip is in late May or early June, plan to be on the water rather than in it — the cycle path and the boats are at their best when the town is still empty.
