Annecy vs Chamonix: which should you choose?

A cable car crossing a rocky col above the treeline, glaciated peaks behind
In short: Chamonix is a mountain town and Annecy is a lake town that happens to be in the mountains. If you have come to the Alps to walk, climb or ski seriously, base yourself in Chamonix. If you want a beautiful town, warm water, a flat cycle path, cheaper prices and something to do when it rains, choose Annecy. They are about 102 km apart, so the third answer — both — is not a cop-out.

They are not really competing for the same trip

Chamonix sits directly under the highest ground in the Alps and exists because of it. Everything in that valley points upwards: the cable cars, the guiding companies, the gear shops, the whole rhythm of the day. It is a serious mountain base and it is superb at being one.

Annecy is a medieval town of around 135,000 people on a lake 14.6 km long, at an elevation of about 447 m, with mountains rising off both shores. The mountains here are the setting rather than the activity. You can fly off one, but you will spend most of your time at lake level, and the town has a market, canals and two museums to fill an afternoon that Chamonix genuinely does not.

Choose Annecy if…

You want to swim. You are travelling with children or with a group whose fitness varies. You want a town you can walk out into in the evening. Your weather forecast is mixed and you need a plan B that is not a shrug. You are watching what the trip costs. You want alpine scenery without committing to alpine effort. Or you want the flying, because the Col de la Forclaz handles up to 200 flights a day and hosted a world acrobatic championship — this is not the consolation prize.

Choose Chamonix if…

You have come for the mountains themselves. You want long days on high paths, glacier views at close range, a serious ski week, or the specific experience of standing under Mont Blanc. You should know that you cannot see Mont Blanc from Annecy town at all — only from height on a clear day — so if the massif is the trip, do not base yourself on the lake and hope.

Insider tip

If your priority is high mountains but you also want a swim and a proper town, base in Annecy and take a full day to Chamonix rather than the reverse. Annecy is the better place to come back to in the evening, and the drive is about an hour and ten.

Doing both

They are about 102 km apart by road, roughly an hour and ten minutes to drive, with buses taking about the same. That is comfortably a day trip in either direction, and the route page goes through the options and the timings.

A common and sensible shape for a week: three or four nights in Annecy at the start, when you want the town and the water, then move up to Chamonix if the forecast is settled. If the forecast is not settled, stay on the lake — a bad-weather week in Chamonix is a hard week, and a bad-weather week in Annecy is just a week with more museums in it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Annecy or Chamonix better?

They suit different trips. Chamonix is the better base for high mountains, serious hiking and skiing. Annecy is better for a lake, swimming, cycling, a walkable town, mixed weather and a lower bill.

How far is Annecy from Chamonix?

About 102 km by road, roughly an hour and ten minutes to drive. Buses take about the same, which makes a day trip in either direction perfectly practical.

Can you visit both Annecy and Chamonix?

Easily. A good shape for a week is a few nights on the lake first, then Chamonix if the forecast is settled. If it is not settled, stay in Annecy — the town works in the rain and a wet day in Chamonix does not.

Is Annecy cheaper than Chamonix?

Generally yes. Annecy’s sightseeing is inexpensive — both museums together are around EUR 8 to EUR 9 and the beaches and cycle path are free — whereas Chamonix prices are high across the board once cable cars are included.

Should you stay in Annecy or Chamonix to see Mont Blanc?

Chamonix, without question. Mont Blanc is not visible from Annecy town at all, only from high ground nearby on a clear day. If the massif is the reason for the trip, stay under it.
