Is Annecy expensive?

Illustration of an open-air market square under awnings, mountains above the roofs
In short: the sightseeing is cheap and the sleeping is not. Both museums together cost less than a cinema ticket, the beaches are mostly free, the lake is free to look at and free to swim in, and the cycle path costs nothing. What costs money in Annecy is a bed in August and a table with a canal view. Move either of those and the town becomes inexpensive very quickly.

The things with published prices

This is the part of a trip you can budget exactly, because the numbers are set by the town rather than by the market.

Palais de l’Île, adultEUR 4 · EUR 5 in Jul–Aug
Musée-Château, adultEUR 6.50 · EUR 7 in Jul–Aug
Both togetheraround EUR 8–9
Under-12sfree at both
Central car parkEUR 1.10/hour
Town beachesfree

Children under twelve go free at both museums, and reduced admission at the château is EUR 3.50, or EUR 4.00 in high summer. On the first Sunday of the month from October to May the château is free outright. A family of four can therefore do both of the town’s museums for well under twenty euros, and in winter for nothing at all.

The lake is the cheap part, which surprises people

The expensive-sounding things here mostly are not. Plage d’Albigny and Plage des Marquisats are free and supervised in season. Plage de l’Impérial went back to being paid for the 2026 season at EUR 4 standard entry, with residents paying less — the arrangement is reviewed each year, so check before you count on either version of it.

The Voie Verte costs nothing to walk and the price of a rental to ride. A boat circuit bought at the quay starts at EUR 19 for an hour and runs to EUR 25 for the two-hour omnibus tour, with children five to twelve at EUR 16 on that one and under-fours free. Those are the operator’s own fares from 2 place aux Bois, and they are the single best value in Annecy.

Insider tip

The cheapest good hour in Annecy is free: walk from the Old Town out along the Marquisats shore in the last hour of daylight. It is about a kilometre, the ridges opposite go orange, and it is the view people pay for from a restaurant terrace.

Getting here is cheaper than getting a bed

Buses from Geneva start from under EUR 10 and take somewhere between forty-five minutes and an hour and twenty. The direct Léman Express train exists despite what most booking sites tell you. From Paris the direct TGV takes about three and three quarter hours and prices behave like any French high-speed fare — cheap early, punishing late.

In town, parking is EUR 1.10 an hour or EUR 2.50 for ninety minutes at Bonlieu and Hôtel de Ville. That is not expensive; what is expensive is driving in at all, because the Old Town is pedestrianised and the car will sit unused for your whole visit.

Where the money actually goes

Two line items dominate an Annecy budget, and neither has a number on this page because neither has a number worth trusting.

Accommodation. Peak season is June to August and August is the peak of the peak. Rooms in the historic core in August are priced the way rooms in a small, famous, space-constrained town in August are always priced. The fix is structural rather than clever: sleeping on a different shore, or coming in mid-May, late June or September, changes the bill more than any booking trick will.

Eating. A canal view is a surcharge, and the correlation between that view and the quality of what arrives is not encouraging. Three streets back from the water is a different price bracket and generally better cooking. What to eat goes through the Savoyard end of the menu, including which of it is a summer mistake.

What works

  • Both museums together cost less than one big-city attraction
  • Two supervised town beaches are free
  • The lakeside cycle path and every viewpoint walk cost nothing
  • Boats bought at the quay start at EUR 19 for an hour
  • Under-12s are free at both museums, and the château is free on some winter Sundays

Worth knowing

  • August accommodation in the historic core is the real expense
  • Canal-view restaurant tables carry a view surcharge
  • Plage de l’Impérial is paid again as of the 2026 season
  • Paragliding and canyoning are the priciest things you will book here
  • A car costs you parking and gives you almost nothing in the centre

So is it expensive or not?

Annecy is an expensive place to sleep in August and an inexpensive place to spend a day. A visitor who arrives by bus, stays outside the core, eats away from the canal and spends their time on the water and the path will have a cheap holiday in one of the most photographed towns in France. A visitor who books a canal-side room in the first week of August will not. The town is the same in both cases.

Frequently asked questions

Is Annecy expensive for tourists?

The sightseeing is cheap and the accommodation is not. Both museums together are around EUR 8 to EUR 9, the town beaches and the lakeside path are free, and a boat circuit starts at EUR 19 at the quay. Beds in the historic core in August are the real cost.

How much does it cost to visit the Palais de l’Île?

Adult admission is EUR 4 from January to June and September to December, and EUR 5 in July and August. Children pay EUR 2 or EUR 2.50, and under-12s go free. A combined ticket with the château is around EUR 8 to EUR 9.

Are the beaches in Annecy free?

Plage d’Albigny and Plage des Marquisats are both free and supervised in season. Plage de l’Impérial returned to paid entry for the 2026 season at EUR 4 standard, with cheaper resident rates. That arrangement is reviewed annually.

What is the cheapest way to get to Annecy?

Bus from Geneva, from under EUR 10, taking between forty-five minutes and an hour and twenty. Coaches from Lyon take about an hour and fifty. Booking a TGV from Paris early is the difference between a reasonable fare and an unreasonable one.

How can you visit Annecy on a budget?

Come outside August, sleep away from the historic core, eat three streets back from the canals, and spend the days on the free things — the beaches, the cycle path and the viewpoint walks. A boat at the quay is the one paid thing worth protecting.
