How to get to Annecy

By air
Geneva (GVA) is the airport for Annecy, about 46 km away. A direct coach takes about 50 minutes. Rail from the airport needs a change and runs closer to two hours, so the coach is usually the better call from the terminal. Note that Geneva airport straddles the French/Swiss border and has a French sector; which side you exit on affects which transport you find first, so read the signage rather than following the crowd.
Lyon-Saint-Exupéry is the other realistic option and works well if you are combining Annecy with anywhere further west or south. It is a longer transfer — Lyon itself is about 138 km from Annecy — but the flight options are broader and often cheaper.
By train
Annecy has a station in the middle of town, a few minutes on foot from the Old Town, which makes rail the most civilised way to arrive by a wide margin. You step off a train and you are already there.
- From Paris: direct TGV inOui from Gare de Lyon, about 3h45, with a handful of direct services a day and many more routings with a change.
- From Geneva: the Léman Express line L2 runs through to Annecy from Genève-Cornavin. Most aggregators still say there is no direct train. They are out of date.
- From Lyon: regular services, usually with a change, and a bus alternative at about 1h50.
By road
Driving to Annecy is straightforward. Geneva is about 51 km and roughly 40 minutes; Chamonix about 102 km and 1h10; Lyon about 138 km and 1h20; Aix-les-Bains about 32 km and 25 minutes.
The honest warning is about what happens when you arrive. The Old Town is pedestrianised, the central car parks fill by mid-morning through the summer, and the lakeshore road backs up badly on hot weekends. A car is genuinely useful for reaching villages on the far side of the lake and for day trips; it is a liability in the centre. The parking page has the car parks, the prices, and the 1.95 m height limit that catches out vans and roof-boxed cars.
By bus
Long-distance coaches are the cheap option and Annecy is well served. From Geneva, FlixBus, BlaBlaCar Bus and Cars Région Haute-Savoie run roughly 11 services a day, taking between 45 minutes and 1h20, with fares starting under EUR 10. Chamonix is about 1h10 by bus, Geneva about 1h18, and Lyon about 1h50.
If you are flying into Geneva and staying in a lake village rather than in Annecy itself, check the bus and boat connections before you book a hotel. Arriving at Annecy station and then discovering your village needs a second bus, or a Navibus that has stopped for the season, is the most common logistical mistake people make here.
Which to choose
What works
- Train from Paris: no transfers, arrives in the centre, about 3h45 door to door
- Coach from Geneva airport: cheapest and simplest airport transfer, about 50 minutes
- Leman Express from Geneva city: direct, frequent, and cheaper than most people expect
- Car: worth it only if you are exploring the far shore or doing day trips
Worth knowing
- Driving into the centre in summer is slow, and parking fills by mid-morning
- Rail from Geneva airport needs a change and takes roughly twice as long as the coach
- Engineering closures do occur on the Annemasse-Annecy stretch — check on the day
- August traffic on the lakeshore road is genuinely bad on hot weekends
